Map Editors, Lightmappers

DeleD

A once-popular free map editor. It offers a wide range of tools for modeling, animation, UV mapping, lightmap generation, rendering using a built-in tracer, and exporting and importing various formats using a plugin system. Initially a commercial product, DeleD became free and open source in 2010 (distributed under the GPL). Unfortunately, DeleD CE 2.45 (2011) was the last version (the developer focused on a new product, the browser-based 3D editor Figuro), but the DeleD community remained active until 2020.

Cartography Shop 4

Another powerful free map editor. It supports CSG operations, has a built-in lightmapper, texture manager, and object manager. The editor works with the CSM format, which is well supported by Xtreme3D. The program's interface is a bit unusual, but if you're willing to spend a little time getting used to it, you'll have one of the best old-school map editors, fully compatible with Xtreme3D!

The program distribution includes a large collection of ready-made textures. To ensure they load correctly in the game, copy the TEXTURES folder from the program folder to your project's working folder. You can also add new textures to the TEXTURES folder; the editor works with JPEG images.

Note: if you receive the "Failed to load color scheme" error upon launch, this means that the SETTINGS.CS file in the program folder was corrupted. If you need to restore it, you can download the original file from here. We recommend making a backup copy for future restores. Unfortunately, on some systems, this must be done after each program close.

Maplet

A map editor that works with the B3D format. A good tool for creating simple games for Xtreme3D 3.x, which has full B3D support. It uses CSG operations and is designed for creating enclosed spaces (best suited for modeling levels for classic corridor shooters and dungeon crawlers). You can create not only rectangular boxes, but also cylindrical columns, ramps, pipes, and slopes. It has a built-in lightmapper. The editor captivates with its simplicity and intuitiveness.

ATF LevelEditor

A free and open-source map editor from Sony Computer Entertainment America. It's quite powerful, but uses a proprietary XML-based format, so to use it, you'll need to understand that format and write a loader/converter for your engine.

Gile[s]

A powerful lightmapper with Global Illumination support, also including map editor tools. It supports multiple light source types (including Omni, Spot, Directional, and Ambient), simulates ambient occlusion, and supports painting over lightmaps.

It supports export to 3DS, ASE, B3D, X, and DBO formats, as well as its own GLS scene format. The format is documented, and there's a decoding example for Blitz3D and an importer for 3ds Max (you can write your own importer for your favorite 3D editor).

The program is freeware since 2008 (see the news item from December 15, 2008, on the Frecle's website). To register, use the name "Freeware" and the serial key "GLS-7781-C787-C274." This information applies to versions 2.0 and 1.36.

Note: If Gile[s] 2.0 freezes during loading, try installing version 1.36 first. This has been shown to help.

Note: Gile[s] 1.36 may not work on modern Windows systems. In this case, DxWrapper for DirectX 7 should help. Copy the ddraw.dll, dxwrapper.dll, and dxwrapper.ini files from the archive to the folder with the installed program.

LightMap Maker

A popular lightmapper. It has a user-friendly interface and supports popular 3D formats (3DS, OBJ, DXF, X, b3D, WRL, etc.). It can render global illumination and caustics.

LMTools

Another lightmapper, this time a console-based one. It works with its own LMTS format, which is supported by Xtreme3D. The package includes the lightmapper itself, a 3DS scene converter, and a viewer. It's not the most convenient tool, especially if you don't use 3ds Max (not all third-party editors support 3DS export with light sources), but as an alternative to LightMap Maker and Cartography Shop, it's a very good one.
